I Will Bless the Lord

It’s an ordinary weekday, but I’m cooking lasagna for snacks when Hannah arrives from school.

After studying her lessons, she and I sit down to read, ponder, and talk about the words of the Lord. We are halfway through chapter 8 of the Gospel of John, and we talk about the truth, of being set free, of being free indeed because of the Son. And we relish and cherish each word, like a healing balm, a lifeline. For His words are spirit, and they are life.

And we thank the Lord for these moments in an ordinary day, but made precious because of His grace and faithfulness.

We set up the coffee table. We put yellow bells in vase, and we gather around to eat, grateful for the food that the Lord puts on our table, and for every delicious morsel that we put into our mouths.

For what if we turn ordinary days into thanksgiving days, celebrations of God’s enduring mercies and unfailing love? What if we choose to celebrate His presence by talking about Him, His love, His Word, and invite Him into all our life’s activities and let our spirit fellowship with Him?

For, yes, ugliness and darkness sometimes steal our joy and peace, and even wound our hearts, but if we stay under His covering light and humbly approach the throne of grace on bended knees, we may obtain mercy and find grace in time of our great need.

What if we choose to bless the Lord, even when our hearts are hurting and our souls are sorrowing, because we know that He never changes – no, no variableness, neither shadow of turning? He is the Father of lights and His gifts are good and perfect.

This weekend, I pray that you, too, would turn ordinary days into thanksgiving days, rejoicing in the Lord’s goodness and blessing Him for His faithfulness. Amen.
