We fly the flag in front of our house, joining in the celebration of our independence (June 12th) from Spain’s more-than-300-year colonization of our beloved country. And as we celebrated Father’s Day, our country also celebrated the 150th birthday of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, whose written works helped liberate our country from the clutches of the Spaniards.
The Philippines had won its independence, but over a century later, we ask, “Are the Filipinos really free?”
We have long embraced the religious teachings and traditions left by the Spaniards. We hadn’t known any other truth, and we are bound to ask, “Have these made our lives better?”
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. (Mat. 15: 9)
Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God. (Mat. 15: 9, NLT)
A life in the Truth – that is, in the Lord Jesus Christ – is a life of righteousness, a life that is closely guided by the Holy Spirit. But we know that while the people profess the faith that we’ve inherited, we are far from the life that was promised walking in the Spirit.
Marriages implode, families and homes break apart, young lives are destroyed by vices and addictions, souls are lost, criminality abounds, immorality is winked at, extreme poverty spreads… And the list goes on.
The people are not truly free for we’ve embraced that which is not the whole truth of the Word of God, and we haven’t done His will for we haven’t known it. But real truth is found only in the Word.
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (John 17: 17)
If what we had been taught was the real truth, we would have been sanctified by it, and we would have been living lives that are well-pleasing in the sight of God. But sadly, this is not the case. The people are not truly free; they are not truly liberated from the works of the god of this world.
What the thief had stolen, killed and destroyed, only the Lord Jesus can restore, revive, and turn around. Only in Him – the Way, the Truth, and the Life – can we have abundant life. Life that is full of grace and truth and righteousness.
And although in the present time the Word of Truth has reached our shores, the eyes of many have not been opened. They remain blind to the truth. And so we continue to labor, that the glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ will shine in the darkness, that the hearts that have been hardened by sin will be opened and the King of glory shall come in.
As long as we remain the servants of sin (John 8: 34), we are still the servants in bondage that we were more than a century ago, and we can never relish true liberty.
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8: 32)
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8: 36)
The family where truth reigns, where the Lord Jesus Christ resides, is a happy and blessed family. And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is true liberty (2 Cor. 3: 17). And where there is true liberty – love, peace, joy, health and prosperity will be in our midst.
Christ-centered families make strong and happy families, peaceful communities and prosperous countries where righteousness reigns.
May I invite you to read this beautiful testimony of God’s mercy and goodness that I’ve written over at my Minister of Mercy site: Healing and Restoration (testimony of a beloved sister-in-Christ). It’s my prayer that you’ll be blessed by it.
