A Light to Others

We are called, not only to receive salvation for ourselves and all the gifts that come from being God’s true children, but also to be lights to others and win souls for Christ.

The moment we receive the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives and His Spirit dwells in our hearts, we begin to walk in His ways, living lives that are both pleasing in God’s sight and shining examples to the people around us. As we grow in the knowledge of His Word and with the closer guidance of the Holy Spirit, we begin to reflect God’s glory, as we ourselves live beautiful lives.

But a beautiful life in Christ doesn’t mean that it’s free from hardships. On the contrary, life in Christ is never easy, and is in fact, strewn with trials along the way. But this is so to mold and refine us according to the Potter’s plans and purposes for us. Trials in many different forms come to discipline us and form our character.

If for a season, we go through pain and suffering, or any difficult trial that is too hard to comprehend – rejoice! – for our faithful God is busy working on us. So that when His work is complete in us, we’re steeped of the valuable lessons we’ve learned during our hardest trials, and we bear the fruit of the Spirit.

Our loving Father lets us go through dark valleys so we would know His comfort and healing, and His love that never fails. So that after we had gone through this passage, we know how to comfort them who are in the same situation as we were.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2 Cor. 1:3,4)

As we walk through these dark valleys, our faith grows and becomes fortified. These are all the Lord’s planning, so that when we’re fully-equipped and ready to rise and shine, we become lights to others who are in the dark, and vessels of hope and encouragement to the sick and the suffering.

Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. (Isaiah 60:1)

We are called to be ambassadors for Christ, sharing the Gospel to the lost. We are called to win souls, and the best way to do that is by showing a shining example to others.

That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among who ye shine as lights in the world. (Phil. 3:15)

I’m delighted to share with you another story (we all love inspiring stories, right?):

Brother Ren Gumayagay, a brother-in-Christ, is a seaman. In 1992, before he came to know the Lord Jesus Christ, he was working with a big shipping company, Hapag-Lloyd, and was earning a lot of money, as most seamen do.

Their life in the ship was one of indulgence, that is, wallowing in different vices – booze, cigarettes, women.

One day, Bro. Ren became ill. He was brought to a hospital in the USA where they were then docked. It was found out that he had a tumor in his lung which could probably be cancer. He left the hospital and they sailed to Europe. While they were in Germany, he had to stay in the ship’s clinic because he had become too sick and too weak to work. He was alone all day, everyday. His fellow seamen didn’t want to come near him. They had all left him.

Bro. Ren began to be depressed. He wasn’t only very ill, he also felt lonely and was becoming hopeless.

One day, he had a visitor. It was the new one who arrived from the Philippines to replace him. (Bro. Ren was to be sent home, but while waiting for his scheduled flight, he had to stay in the ship’s clinic).

Much to Bro. Ren’s surprise, his replacement visited him many times in the day, bringing him milk, fruits, and other snacks this compassionate man had carefully prepared.

Bro. Ren was amazed by him. This man really cared for him – speaking to him with comforting words and showing him kindness. While his other companions had all abandoned him, this one stayed by his bedside.

His replacement, a born-again Christian from the Jesus Miracle Crusade International Ministry, told him not to lose hope, and shared with him the Gospel. He told him many testimonies of God’s healing in the Church and encouraged him to go there when he arrived home in Manila.

Bro. Ren was strengthened and hope shone on his weary soul. When he arrived in Manila, he visited the Church of JMCIM and there, he received Jesus Christ and was baptized in water in His name.

The Lord Jesus completely healed him of his lung disease that he was able to go back to his work as a seaman. His life was also completely changed by the Lord.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matt. 5:16)
