God’s Jewels

“They shall be Mine”, says the Lord of hosts, “On the day that I make them MY JEWELS…” (Mal. 3:17, emphasis added)

From the time that God has made us His possession when He purchased us with the blood of His Son, He has been making us His precious jewels. When He found us, we were ugly, dirty ores of gold. But He is our refiner and purifier, and He will perform this task on us until He has accomplished His purpose.

…For He is like a refiner’s fire and like launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness. (Mal.3:2,3)

How does God make us into His own beautiful, sparkling jewels?

  • Like the Refining of Gold

This cleansing or purification process of the Lord is painful. (I have found that out first-hand). But I realized that if He wouldn’t do it to me, I would remain an ore – a dirty rock that doesn’t have brilliance. And I knew that if the process wasn’t that painful, I wouldn’t be learning and growing well and shining as He wanted me to.

A gold ore.

God’s Word is true. When He says He will refine us as gold is refined, He will exactly do that. Processing and refining of gold in the mines involve many steps to produce 99.9% pure product. But basically, it involves a separation process wherein the gold is “liberated” from the worthless gangue rock which surrounds it, then the gold charge is melted in a furnace to refine it.

Melted gold.

Similarly, we undergo the same processes in our “refining” and trying of our faith. The fiery trial that we go through is like us as a gold ore being liberated from the worthless rock that surrounds us, then thrown into the fiery furnace to refine us. THAT, as I have experienced, IS PAINFUL AND HARD. But what did Apostle Peter say?

That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, THOUGH IT BE TRIED WITH FIRE, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. (1 Pet. 1:7, emphasis added)

Pure gold is so precious. But to God, the trial of our faith and our refining are MUCH MORE precious. God uses our trials – our hardships, pain, and suffering – to make us into the jewels that He has designed and purposed aforetime.  Are their impurities in our hearts, minds and speech? Is their disobedience to His Word in our lives? Do we clothe ourselves with humility and live in holiness? He will not stop until He has purified us and we come out shining like gold.

Product: shining gold.

But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I SHALL COME FORTH AS GOLD. (Job 23:10, emphasis added)

  • Like the Cutting and Polishing of a Diamond

Rough diamond is cut at different angles until it becomes a multi-faceted, brilliant gem. Just like rough diamonds, the Lord cuts in us everything that offends, until we sparkle at any angle we are viewed and examined.

“…and every branch that bears fruit HE PRUNES, that it may bear more fruit. (John 15:2, emphasis added)

As like the refining of gold and the cutting of diamond, let us yield our whole selves to God and let Him complete His work in us to be counted worthy to become His own precious jewels. Also, let us surrender wholeheartedly to His purposes for us, and humbly follow Him wherever He leads us and whatever He wants us to do. Then the world will know and see that we are God’s own shining jewels: loved, treasured, and protected by Him.

“Then you shall again discern between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.” (Mal. 3:18)
