The Lord knows our thoughts and He searches our hearts. We cannot hide anything from Him.
…for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts… (1 Chron. 28:9)
It is easy to praise and worship the Lord with all our hearts and minds and sing with gladness if we see His blessings abounding in our lives. But how about during seasons of great trial? When pain and suffering won’t go away for a very long time no matter how we beg the Lord to take them away? How about when we go through sickness and constant fear thinking that it just might be the hour to go? When at night we beg the Lord to have mercy upon us that it would be a better day the next day, but the exact opposite happens?
It might be that our hearts become bitter. We begin to believe that God doesn’t love us, that maybe He’s angry at us and He’s punishing us. We begin to harbor self-pity, envy, resentment, unbeliefs, doubts. We may even blame God for all our hardships and suffering. If these are left unchecked, we begin to withdraw from God. This isn’t easily noticed by those around us, because it happens first in our hearts and minds.
If we have let this happen to us, then, we’re not only sick and suffering, we’re also angry, unhappy and far from God and His favor – what a miserable state to be in!
What must we do?
- We draw nearer to God. We must understand that it’s completely unprofitable to turn away from Him, and it’s when we draw near to Him that He draws near to us.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double-minded. (James 4:8)
We draw near by worshiping Him with all our hearts and minds and souls, FORGETTING our suffering, our pain, or any dificult situation we’re in.
We sing songs of praise that GLORIFY Him, HONOR Him, and EXALT His name. As we sing, we remember that HE IS GOD – true, just, righteous, and holy. Just sing. Let Him hear our voice HONORING and BLESSING Him for all His judgments and goodness and mercy. Sing as the children of God that we are – humble, meek and dependent on Him.
Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases. (Please read the whole Psalm 103).
- We read, meditate, and study the Word of God until it takes over our whole being and overflows, that we have to SHARE it to others. We will be blessed by doing this.
BLESSED are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (Matt. 5:6, emphasis added)
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments; For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. (Prov. 3:1-2)
- Meditate on God’s goodness. Focus on the TRUTH about Him and every single thing that He’s done for us, and not on our suffering. Think about how He took us out of the dark pit, bore our sin and shame on His body, and cleansed us by His blood that flowed in Calvary. We’ll no longer suffer in hell because of Him. Think about these things!
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)
HE BORE OUR SIN AND SHAME. This is more than enough reason to HONOR Him! Let’s do that with all that is within us.
…for them that honour me I will honour… (1 Sam. 2:30)
I’ve been through all these things that I’ve shared and discussed. And God has been merciful to me and I’ve received His blessings in many ways – healing, comfort, peace, joy, wisdom…
